Everything you need to know about Spirit Airlines Flights
If you’re trying to save money on your upcoming flight, Spirit Airlines may be your best bet, but don’t expect to get much else out of the experience! This airline has been dubbed one of the most dreaded in America by many Spirit airlines customer service satisfaction surveys and for good reason. Before you book your next Spirit Airlines Reservations, make sure you know what you’re getting into with Spirit Airlines! Here are some things to keep in mind before booking your next trip with Spirit
What are Spirit Airlines Flights?
Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier (LCC), is an American airline that operates scheduled flights throughout North America. It also offers international charter service. The company has hubs at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Along with its sister airline, Allegiant Air, it serves over 90 cities around North America. As of November 2017, Spirit carries more than 2 million passengers annually aboard what it calls ultra-low cost flights. In August 2018, Spirit announced plans to fly from six new domestic spirit airlines destinations: El Paso; Hartford; Indianapolis; Lexington, Kentucky; Savannah/Hilton Head Island/Bluffton, South Carolina; and Spokane. This will bring their total count up to 84 destinations for 2019. On June 11, 2018, Spirit officially began service to Rome's Fiumicino Airport. They are currently serving 7 routes out of Rome's airport which include: Baltimore; Fort Lauderdale; Orlando/Sanford; Philadelphia; Boston; Washington D.C.; Chicago O'Hare and Los Angeles.
How do I get the cheapest Spirit airlines flights?
The best way to get cheap Spirit airlines flights is often clear: book early. If you have flexibility in your travel plans, then it’s better to search for cheap spirit airlines tickets several months in advance. But don’t book spirit airlines too early—flight also has a tendency of having sales closer to departure date when fares tend to be less expensive than earlier bookings. But what if you don’t have flexibility in your travel plans? The next-best thing is still fairly obvious: find out whether there are any hidden fees that would make a cheap spirit airline ticket not so cheap after all. For example, are charges for seat selection and Spirit checked bags included in that base fare? Are those costs going to add up quickly? And do you want to pay for carry-on luggage or will you try to pack everything into a single bag (and risk paying extra)? Spirit doesn’t include many frills with its low fares, but they do offer two free carry-on bags on every flight. If you can manage without checking luggage, consider packing light and bringing just one small personal item like a purse or laptop bag instead of an extra suitcase. You can always check Spirit airlines baggage on another airline if necessary! Also keep in mind that Spirit flights offer some discounts on flights booked online; if you plan to buy your spirit airline ticket at the airport, expect to pay more. If you really want to save money, sign up for Spirit’s newsletter and follow them on social media; they often send out coupons and special offers via email or Facebook. It never hurts to ask about discounts either—if you’re booking over email or phone, see if there are any last-minute deals available before booking anything final. Finally, Spirit does offer loyalty programs for frequent flyers who fly frequently with them. If you fly regularly, signing up for their rewards program might help cut down on future costs. Just remember that rewards programs aren’t free—they come with their own fees and restrictions! In general, though, signing up for loyalty programs won't cost much and could end up saving you hundreds of dollars in airfare over time. So even if you only use Spirit occasionally, joining their rewards program could be worth it.
Legroom/Comfort/Seat Configuration
Unlike most other airlines, there is no way to gauge how much room you will have based on how far in advance you book. Spirit seats are generally configured with a single seat on either side of a central aisle. The armrests between seats can be raised or lowered in order to increase or decrease space between passengers. It is possible for two (or even three) people to squeeze into one seat by lowering both armrests and raising them up again once on board; however, many passengers find such tight quarters less than ideal for long-distance flights. If all three armrests are down and your neighbor's elbow finds its way into your lap throughout a flight, things might get a little too personal for comfort. A simple solution is to bring an extra pillow, which can easily be used as a barrier between you and your neighbor. However, some travelers have complained that these pillows do not provide enough support when sleeping while others claim they offer just enough cushioning to make sleeping difficult. If you do decide to bring an extra pillow with you, it may help reduce any awkward encounters with fellow passengers by serving as a physical barrier between yourself and others. There’s also always the wall if nothing else works! Even though seats don't recline, each passenger does receive a small foldable table at their seat. These tables are great for storing items during take off and landing but aren't so great at holding anything heavy like books or laptops. If you're hoping to rest your head against something comfortable like a solid surface then you'll probably want to avoid using these tables as pillows altogether. In addition to having smaller seating configurations than standard planes, Spirit has only one bathroom per plane meaning lines tend to get pretty long after takeoff and before landing. For those who require more frequent restroom breaks during flights, consider booking on another airline instead where bathrooms are more readily available without having to walk through rows of people seated along narrow aisles. While legroom isn't horrible, taller passengers may wish to check out other airlines with wider seats since legroom tends to vary depending on whether or not someone is sitting in front of you. Some seats are better than others when it comes to legroom; for example, Seat 4A is considered by many to be one of the best choices on board because there's significantly more legroom behind row 4 compared to rows 5-8. Row 8B has especially limited legroom due to its proximity to lavatories located directly behind row 8. Another popular choice among flyers is Row 6D since there's a bit more room next to window seats compared with middle and aisle seats nearby. To ensure you have ample legroom, be sure to select a seat toward the back of Spirit Airlines Booking and in rows 3 or higher. You should also keep in mind that seat width varies slightly between aircraft and seats on different sides of a plane. Seats on left-hand sides of planes are usually slightly narrower than seats on right-hand sides of planes. On top of that, seats with more windows tend to be narrower than seats with fewer windows.
Scratch n' win aka Upgrades, Bags, and Seats
While your upgrades, bags, and seats are paid for in cash by other passengers when using low-cost carriers like Spirit, it's better to purchase them before you travel. Otherwise, be prepared to spend more money on these items during your flight. For example, a seat upgrade can cost $30 per person each way—double what you'd pay at spirit check-in if purchased ahead of time. Additionally, if there are multiple people traveling with you and one or more passengers need spirit checked baggage but don't purchase it when they book their ticket (assuming they're all booked on one reservation), expect that your luggage fees will go up as well. A little prep work can save a lot of money! Happy travels! The Basic Carry-On: This is pretty straightforward. It should fit easily into an overhead bin or under your seat and allow you to keep your belongings with you at all times. If you have a larger bag, consider purchasing an item that converts from backpack to suitcase so that it doesn't count against carry-on space. Your basic carry-on should include everything necessary for a trip including clothing, toiletries, shoes, documents/laptop/electronics etc... But no liquids please! You'll also want room for snacks - airplane food isn't always satisfying and sometimes quite overpriced too! What Are Travel Credit Cards? Travel credit cards help you earn rewards points while flying, which can then be redeemed for free flights and hotel stays. These cards are especially useful if you fly frequently or plan to take a vacation soon since rewards points add up quickly. Airline Credit Cards: These cards offer exclusive perks such as free checked bags, priority boarding, lounge access, and special discounts on airfare. Hotel Credit Cards: Similar to airline credit cards, hotel credit cards provide benefits such as complimentary breakfast and late checkout upon request. Prepaid Debit Cards: Some prepaid debit cards come with built-in chip technology which makes it safer than carrying around large amounts of cash abroad. Many prepaid debit cards can be used internationally without incurring foreign transaction fees. Be sure to read through any fine print associated with your card because some only work domestically. How Do I Use My Rewards Points? Once you've earned enough points, redeem them for free spirit flights booking and hotel stays. There are several ways to do so depending on how many points you have accumulated: Pay With Points: This option allows you to use your rewards point balance toward eligible purchases made directly through your credit card company's website for spirit airlines or call center. Shop Through Rewards Websites: Certain online retailers will let you shop through their portal where every dollar spent earns a certain amount of reward points toward future purchases. This means you can purchase items you need and still get rewarded for it! Redeem for Gift Cards: In addition to cash back, some credit cards give you a certain amount of points for every dollar spent. In turn, those points can be converted into gift cards. However, most rewards programs require a minimum number of points to redeem them for gift cards. So if you only have a few hundred points, it might not be worth your time. Earn Cash Back: Some credit cards will give you cash back on every purchase made with your card. So even if you aren't interested in free flights or hotel stays, earning cash back on your everyday spending is another great way to save money!
Fees Are Low, But Still Come With Fees
People are often attracted to low fares on Spirit, but they should keep in mind that most things cost extra. Your spirit checked bag will cost $35 each way, while carry-ons run $20. You'll pay extra for just about anything else: advance seat assignments ($10), drinks ($3) and snacks ($2). For example, a ticket from Las Vegas to New York costs $59 plus taxes—and don't forget those fees. If you want to bring your bag, check it at least one day before departure (48 hours if you're flying internationally). If you're checking two bags or more, purchase your spirit airlines tickets three days before departure or earlier. And be sure to arrive at least an hour before your flight's scheduled departure time; Spirit doesn't allow any changes after spirit check-in. All of these rules can add up quickly. An average domestic round trip flight with Spirit will set you back around $200 per person, including spirit airlines baggage fee 2022. By comparison, American Airlines charges about $120 per person for its cheapest round trip Spirit Airlines between major cities like Los Angeles and Chicago. But where Spirit really shines is when it comes to international flights—many of which are only available through third-party booking sites like tripitravels or travelqart. A recent search found a roundtrip flight to Miami Spirit from Cancun going for as little as $110 total when booked through Expedia—compared with over $500 on other airlines. The caveat? Spirit's international flights generally involve long layovers, sometimes lasting multiple days. That said, even those who aren't interested in making connections might consider using Spirit for their outbound flight—the airline has several hubs throughout Latin America and Europe that make connecting to other destinations easy. Just remember: When it comes to Spirit airlines baggage fee 2022, buying your ticket directly from Spirit will save you money. Buying through a third party site could result in higher fees because they charge their own additional service fee. Also, Spirit airlines tickets purchased through a third party usually won't qualify for frequent flyer miles. On some routes, it's cheaper to buy separate one-way tickets than to buy a roundtrip ticket direct from Spirit. To get around high last-minute fares and potential extra fees, book your trip at least 14 days in advance (28 days if traveling internationally). Tickets purchased more than 14 days in advance tend to be cheaper than those brought closer to departure date. Note that there are no refunds on Spirit airlines flight cancellation—even if you change your mind or miss your flight due to extenuating circumstances such as illness or death in the family. Spirit also offers a few optional services, such as travel insurance and seat selection. Travel insurance, which ranges from $8 to $17 for a domestic flight and $12 to $30 for an international flight, covers you in case your plane is delayed or spirit airline flights canceled. Seat selection costs $8 per segment and lets you choose your seats in advance. As with the other fees, you can avoid paying these extras by purchasing your ticket directly from Spirit. There’s also a chance you’ll be able to find lower prices on sites like Google Flights or Kayak—but beware that not all fares are created equal. Be sure to compare prices carefully so you don’t end up paying more than necessary for the same itinerary.
Rewards and Promotions
Flying can be stressful, but there are ways to make it a little easier on yourself. First, Spirit check in online beforehand, which will allow you to skip any potential long lines at spirit airlines check-in online. If you're flexible on your travel times and dates, keep an eye out for deals on flights—last-minute deals can save hundreds of dollars per ticket. Finally, redeem your frequent flier miles—they often translate into free or discounted tickets. It's not as common these days for airline loyalty programs to offer big rewards and promos like they did in years past; but if you fly enough with one airline over time, don't be afraid to ask! Sometimes, airlines offer perks to reward their most loyal customers (or people who just happen to be checking out their site that day). Rewards vary by carrier and may include discounts on upgrades, extra spirit airlines baggage allowances, waived change fees and more. So before spirit airlines booking your next flight, give them a call or check their spirit airlines official website for details. After all, even just a small perk can make flying more enjoyable—and when you’re spending hours sitting in economy class after working all week, that’s important!
Like Spirit Airlines? Share it with your friends!
This also means that if you see someone else’s deal on flights, don’t be afraid to call and ask them if they can beat it. Most airlines want to maintain good relationships with their spirit airlines customer service and will often match or come close to competing deals. They may even offer perks, like priority boarding or other benefits, if they feel like they’re losing business. If they still don’t meet your price, go ahead and book—you might save more than expected in total due to hidden fees and taxes. For example, a $400 round-trip flight from New York City to Las Vegas may actually cost closer to $500 when all is said and done. Don't forget to factor in Spirit airlines baggage fee 2022, carry-on allowances and other add-ons into your final cost! And finally, don't forget that rewards credit cards can also provide discounts on airfare purchases. For example, some cardholders get up to 5% cash back for airline purchases (up to $100 per year), plus free Spirit checked bags for themselves and up to four travel companions!
Booking Tips
Booking with Spirit Airlines is a somewhat complicated affair. Once you’ve figured out your routes, what’s left is figuring out how much it will cost. The best way to get around paying high fees is by bundling trips together and not booking one-way flights. For example, if I have a Spirit Airlines to Denver from Los Angeles on February 28th, but have no plans to return until March 3rd, I might look for another cheap flight that leaves LAX on March 2nd and returns on March 5th—that way both legs are bundled together and I only pay for one trip rather than two separate ones. If you don’t want to book multiple trips or take extra time off work, there are still ways to save money. First of all, always book round-trip tickets because they often come with lower rates than one-way tickets. If you can afford it, purchase an upgraded seat so that you can be comfortable during your long flight (and avoid having a child in front of you kicking your seat). Finally, keep an eye out for promotions! Spirit sometimes offers promo codes and coupons through email or social media channels like Facebook or Twitter; they also occasionally offer discounts at specific times of year (for instance: Valentine's Day!). It never hurts to check online before buying your ticket just in case something pops up. And remember, as we mentioned above, bundle your trips together when possible! This is one area where Spirit excels—the more miles you fly within a set period of time, the cheaper each leg becomes. So if you plan to travel frequently between Chicago and New York City over the next few months, consider getting a pass that allows unlimited flying within three months instead of booking individual flights every week. Keep in mind that certain passes require pre-booking (usually 14 days ahead), so plan accordingly! You can view Spirit's current deals here.
The following are some things to watch out for when booking your flight: Fees - A lot of these fees will depend on which city you're departing from, but here are some common charges that appear regularly: Change/Cancellation Fee ($30) - If you change or cancel your spirit airline reservation after purchasing it, expect to pay $30 per person. Spirit airlines Baggage Fee 2022 ($25-$50) - Most airlines charge $25 per spirit checked bag, though some go as high as $50 per bag. Be sure to check how many bags you can bring before making a purchase! Seat Selection Fee ($2-$15) - This fee is charged if you want to choose a seat ahead of time. It's usually cheaper if you book online and select seats there rather than paying at check-in spirit airlines; however, if there's a particular seat that has extra legroom (or doesn't have a middle seat), then it might be worth paying more for an upgraded seat. Spirit bag policy Delivery Charge ($5-$20) - If you don't pick up your bags at baggage claim and would like them delivered instead, most airlines charge between $5 and $20 per bag.
Baggage Tips
If you want to carry luggage free on a Spirit airline flight, there are some restrictions. The most notable is that each passenger is limited to one small personal item or carry-on bag, which must not exceed 17 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches. Plus, your carry-on must fit under your seat or in an overhead bin. Larger carry-ons—like backpacks and suitcases—count as one of your two Spirit airline baggage. Each checked bag costs $30-$100 per piece (depending on size) with a maximum charge of $60 for the second spirit checked bag. Carry-ons that cost less than $30 will be subject to a $10 fee if they aren't small enough to fit under a seat or in an overhead bin. For international flights, each carry-on counts toward your weight allowance. In addition to paying Spirit airlines baggage fees, passengers who check more than one bag will also pay additional charges based on their itinerary: $25 for any connecting domestic flight within 48 hours; $50 for any connecting domestic flight within 24 hours; and $75 for any international connection after 24 hours. In addition to these spirit baggage fees, you'll also have to pay a gate handling charge ($5-$15) if you're checking a bag at curbside instead of at spirit airlines ticketing. You can avoid Spirit airlines baggage fee altogether by traveling light and carrying everything on board. However, Spirit doesn't allow certain items onboard such as weapons, flammable materials, and fireworks. You can find a full list of prohibited items here . Additionally, you may not bring liquids onto your flight unless they're 3 ounces or smaller and stored in a clear 1-quart plastic zip baggie. You can find out more information about liquids here . And finally, remember that electronic devices like laptops cannot exceed 16 x 9 x 1. 8 inches and weigh no more than 11 pounds. Keep in mind that even if you don't have any bags to check, you still might end up paying a few extra dollars for other things. For example, all passengers between 18 and 21 years old must pay $25 to bring one carry-on bag onboard plus another $35 roundtrip when traveling within North America. All minors between 2 and 17 years old must purchase spirit airlines tickets at least 10 days before departure but don't get charged extra for carry-ons until they turn 18 years old. All pets weighing over 8 pounds will be charged an additional $75 each way plus taxes.
Spirit Checked Bag Fee Exceptions
There are actually two types of exceptions for Spirit checked bags: The first is for Spirit codeshare flights. If you’re taking a flight on another airline that has a code-share agreement with Spirit, but is marketed as that other airline (i.e., Delta is not flying under their own name), then your fee will be waived. Otherwise, if it’s not a codeshare flight and you are traveling on an itinerary where you could have purchased your ticket on any carrier, or at least one other than Spirit, then they will waive it. Otherwise it’s $35 per bag—you get one free carry-on item too! This also applies to minors; if you purchase spirit airlines tickets for minors and yourself, only your Spirit airlines bag fees will be waived. If you buy tickets separately, only your fees will be waived. Also note that when checking in online, it asks whether anyone in your party is 18 years old or younger; once they see yes in their system, there should no longer be a charge on those passengers' tickets because those passengers are still considered minors by U.S. standards. However, if you check in over the phone, they may not make that spirit airlines distinction and try to charge everyone's bags. Just remind them that they don't need to charge minors for luggage unless they're purchasing a separate seat from you. You can read more about Spirit airlines baggage policy here .
If you're bringing a pet aboard, it'll cost $100 each way for pets weighing up to 50 pounds and $200 each way for pets weighing 51 pounds or more. Service animals aren't charged a fee...but please bring documentation from your doctor stating so! You can read more about transporting pets here .
Spirit's carry-on policy is as follows: If your bag doesn’t fit in our bins, we’ll ask you to check it at no charge. However, if they do decide that your bag is too big (and they will not measure it beforehand), they will charge you $50 per bag. This policy is new as of January 2016; previously there was no size restriction on carry-ons. You can read more about their carry-on policy here . Note that you can also purchase a seat for any item you want to bring with you onboard...but considering how cheap their fares are, it probably won't be worth it unless you're bringing something really bulky or heavy. You can read more about their seat selection process here . As far as strollers go, both types are allowed aboard but must be checked at the gate for free—you cannot bring them into the plane cabin with you. You can read more about stroller policies here . Note that these policies are subject to change and may vary depending on where and when your flight departs/arrives; please make sure to double check with an agent before boarding!
Smarter Traveler Guide
Before traveling, always check Spirit airlines baggage policy and fees. Fees for additional bags can be as high as $100 on Spirit Airlines, so if your carry-on bag is overweight or oversize, that could save a significant amount of money. Bring only what you can fit in your carry-on luggage and make sure to weigh it before leaving home; not only will you pay less with a light load but also free up space in case another passenger needs it. Researching fares ahead of time can also save some cash—although most people don’t realize that they can look into flights up to eight weeks ahead of time with no extra fee. Another money-saving idea: Consider driving instead of flying, especially since parking at airports can cost anywhere from $10-$20 per day. Many times, driving is actually faster than flying because traffic jams are far more common on roads than in air lanes. Finally, when booking your flight online, use comparison websites like Kayak or Momondo to find deals from other airlines. These sites let you search multiple airlines at once and compare prices instantly. You might even find cheaper tickets by booking directly through an Spirit airlines website rather than going through a third party site like Expedia or Orbitz. This works best if you're flexible with your travel dates and Spirit airlines destination. If not, book early! If you have flexibility, consider purchasing an open jaw ticket (where one leg of your trip is a one-way flight). This way, you'll have more options when choosing where to fly in and out of. And remember: Flying during off-peak hours generally means lower ticket prices. For example, midweek flights tend to be cheaper than weekend ones because fewer people are traveling then. However, if you're trying to get somewhere quickly (say within 48 hours), it may be worth paying extra for a seat on a direct flight versus taking two separate planes. Also note that many companies offer discounts if you buy tickets in advance; typically these discounts start three months before your departure date. The sooner you purchase your ticket, the better deal you can get. But don't wait too long either—the closer to the departure date you buy, the higher chance there is that something unexpected will happen and cause delays or Spirit airlines flight cancellation. So keep tabs on weather conditions leading up to your flight. Always call or email Spirit Airlines customer service number if there is any issue with checking in online prior to arriving at the airport just in case there are issues with Spirit airlines reservations made online which was a very common issue I had while booking tickets from spirit airlines . Usually customer service reps were able to fix all issues easily without having me contact my credit card company for help, which was a very nice experience I had while dealing with spirit airlines customer service department .
